Listen HERE A piece recently released by the Ombnibus Classics label [NAXOS Direct] was commissioned and recorded by the Minkin-Shemer harpsichord duo (Marina Minkin – David Shemer). The piece emerges and exists on the narrow boundary between the classical Renaissance form known as “chaconne” with its characteristically repeating patterns and the sharp, rough sound of 20th century rock-music. The work is a tribute to a one of the great musicians of the late 20th century, Frank Zappa; a modest homage to a great “musical law breaker”, whose contribution to the development of music is yet to be appreciated and understood. Music sheet samples:

The piece is a solo piano version of the first movement from the Trumpet Sonata, and at the same time is a movement from the "12 Constellations" cycle, and is associated with the Zodiac sign of Leo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-TwAdBs7v4&list=UUqvXkVjjJRQ0k_CST3qNkaA

Commissioned in 2014 by Israeli Ensemble PHOENIX of early instruments, the piece features a prominent role for the harpsichord in powerful exchanges with 2 baroque violins, baroque viola and viola da gamba. This “somewhat off-the-road journey” quotes an ancient Andalusian piyut sang for the Jewish High Holidays called “Ki Gadol Yom”.  The piece is dedicated to the memory of the Jewish expulsion from Spain 1492-97. The original title "IN THE SEARCH OF THE CHACONNE" was later transformed into the "SPANISH LAMENTO".   Performances:15 March 2015, World premiere,  The Austrian Hospice, Jerusalem [Phoenix Ensemble]17  March 2015 Tel Aviv, The Israel Conservatory of Music

The piece is a final movement from the Piano concerto 3 for solo piano and symphonic orchestra and is based upon the ancient prayer chants of the Jewish communities of the Northern Africa, Spain, Morocco and Andalusia. Tradition going back many hundred years back in time is presented with a new and unexpectedly fresh setup and arrangement. However it is hardly to be overseen that the composer`s own roots are based on European\Russian cultural ground, thus making the fusion between these cultures even more fascinating and intriguing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldxhtDJn75U

Esher who`s artistic output is in many ways about creating a sense of illusion and visual ambiguity. Whereas creating an illusory effect in the visual realm is well known and quite palpable, in the sonic\musical realm it should be represented with less obvious means due to a more abstract nature of the medium and its perception. The ambiguity is expressed here on different levels – rhythmic, melodic but also

Uri Brener composed the piece "Small Wind Quintet" at a time he was a student at the Gnessin College in Moscow in 1991 and only 16 years old. The second movement, central to the work, has an introverted and contemplative character, influenced by Shostakovich's spirit, especially by the second movement of the Ninth Symphony. "The Phoenix" (2018) for flute and harp Many times we see life as a fleeting thing, a meager moment between two abysses, as the famous saying of Rabbi Ibn Ezra goes "The past does not exist, the future is yet to come, and the present is like a blink of an eye". But a deeper look reveals that life and death are only two sides of the same coin and are not opposites. This is actually what the legend about the immortal bird called "Phoenix", which originates in many cultures and also in the Jewish midrashic literature, teaches us. This is also

Two pieces originally composed as vocal compositions on the text of Psalms Nr.13 and 23, adopted later for trumpet, piano and strings. Just as the content of these two chapters, their musical characters are in a strong contrast to each other. While the first (Nr.13) is full of pain and anguish, search after consolation and salvation, the second one (Nr.23) is full of quiet joy and tranquility. Their respective styles are very different too. The first movement is based on sharp dissonant harmonies with a repetitive outcry in the solo line, followed by big rise from the lowest register up

Brener chooses a precise, chamber-like instrumentation to create a world of dualistic tension. The piece tells a universal story of harmony and its irrevocable rupture, resonating deeply on a personal and emotional level. The title seems like a homage to John Milton’s epic poem, "Paradise Lost" (1667), which provided the definitive literary and dramatic structure for the biblical story of the Fall of Man. Brener’s music structurally and thematically impressively mirrors this epic journey, progressing from Paradise

11 OCTOBER 2020, around 9 am - Uri`s "Jazz Sebastian Bach" recording with Noam Buchman and "Tabula Rasa" Jazz Trio ("Eighth Note" label) will be broadcast on the Kol Hamusika National Israeli music channel https://tunein.com/radio/KAN-KOL-HAMUSICA-913-s14193/

Much of the musical material in the piece comes from Jewish prayer chants (`piutim`) of the Northern Africa, Spain, Morocco and Andalusia communities tradition, going back many hundred years back in time. Such is the main theme of the first movement, based on the Yom Kippur piut "Shamati Shim`ekha" ("שמעתי שמך") as well as the ending motif, which is a melody from another Yom Kippur piut "Ki Gadol Yom" ("כי גדול יום"). The last movement is based on the melody from a Kabbalistic prayer before breaking the bread - "Lemivyza Al Rifta" ("למבצע על ריפתא"). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkR4XtFCamI

Archi-textures by Uri Brener takes its cue from the famous aphorism attributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “Music is liquid architecture; architecture is frozen music.” The piece treats musical time and space as an architectural continuum, inviting the listener to hear structure as if moving through a succession of constructed forms. At the core of the work lies a seemingly simple melodic line whose true complexity is only revealed through a large-scale, or “mega-”, canon. This technique subjects the melody to strict repetition at a fixed one-bar distance, so that its full harmonic ramifications emerge cumulatively, much as a single geometric motif

The piece was chosen on the call for scores of PIERROT ENSEMBLE SERIES Vol. 5 Recordings 2021. In the resume it was stated: "We were very taken and impressed with your Three Ballet Scenes. The piece has tremendous instrumental color, beautiful textures, impressive formal structure and most of all uses the orchestra brilliantly." At the same time it was chosen for a recording with the Israeli "Meitar" ensemble, and will be performed and recorded as a part of their live stream next month.

The Second Sonata for violin and piano in E minor was written as a tribute to the neo-romantic tradition, with the central tonal axis existing alongside many other different colors, both polytonal and atonal. Motifs of the first movement resonate with those characteristic of Rachmaninoff, the last of the late romantics. The second movement, much in a spirit of "De Profundis" ("Out of the depths")  is a type of monody that strives to reach out from the lowest register to new heights each time only to collapse to the bottom again, all this without any harmonic foundation. Only in the

The piece was commissioned by the "Atar" trio in 2021 and it is the third piece for this ensemble in Brener`s compositions list. The musical texture is built on a contrast between minimalistic and reflective elements, reminiscent of water flow (or energy or thought for that matter- hence the name of the piece, of course), and between more rhythmically defined elements, which have their roots in the world of jazz. The inherent contrast results in clashes between the two elements while each gets one gains some of its counterpart`s characteristics. In the bottom line, all the ingredients turn into one

Second Violin Concerto by Uri Brener (2023) OP.114 This concerto can be heard as a vivid musical journey in three acts, where lyric confession, struggle, and mercurial play are held together by a strong dramatic logic. The violin emerges as a narrator whose voice moves freely between intimacy, heroism, and mischievous irony. First movementThe concerto opens unusually, with a solo cadenza that appears almost before the piece has begun, as if the violin were thinking aloud in a private, introspective monologue. This fragile, searching voice is then abruptly confronted by a powerful orchestral entrance, whose sheer force seems to negate the introverted

The piece is a kind of a ballad composed on the text by a Russian-Israeli poet Igor Khentov, telling the story of musicians who perished in the Holocaust  through the story of their respective musical instruments. The text is partially sung and partially recited by the soloist as a narration, thus creating a more dramatic way to  convey the tragic account.  Performances: World premiere Ashkelon, Yad Lebanim Hall, March, 3, 2023 w Nadezhda Gaidukova, mezzo , Tatjana Beltser, Evgeny Voskobojnikov, Irina Saveljeva and Anton Andreev https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA6P5GnFv4A

"The Phoenix" (2018) for flute, viola and harp Many times we see life as a fleeting thing, a meager moment between two abysses, as the famous saying of Rabbi Ibn Ezra goes "The past does not exist, the future is yet to come, and the present is like a blink of an eye". But a deeper look reveals that life and death are only two sides of the same coin and are not opposites. This is actually what the legend about the immortal bird called "Phoenix", which originates in many cultures and also in the Jewish midrashic literature, teaches us. This is

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW0PHH6K1uU A Sonic Reflection Between Depths and Hope Composed around the B-A-C-H motif in a homage to Johann Sebastian Bach - whose unwavering trust in God endured despite profound hardships- this piece embarks on an extraordinary journey through deep darkness and hope. With its rich textures and poignant expressivity, it crafts a spellbinding narrative across three organically unfolding movements, each flowing into the next with an inevitability that mirrors the cycles of struggle and renewal in human existence. From the first stirring notes to the final, enigmatic resolution, the composition captivates the listener, leaving an indelible mark on the soul. First

The piece is based on biblical account of a mighty confrontation between patriarch Jacob and an angel, which symbolizes confrontation with the powers that are trying to exterminate or undermine the role of Jewish nation as God`s witness in this world among the nations. It is an eternal fight of human spirit against outside powers that are seemingly much stronger, yet are unable to break this spirit, no matter the circumstances. Even in the darkest moments of human history, Jewish and human spirit has remained undefeated and unsubdued. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itNbQ9ZKejk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo8F4pF7p6w
