PIANO TRIO NR.3 “THE FLOW” for violin, cello and piano (2021)

The piece was commissioned by the "Atar" trio in 2021 and it is the third piece for this ensemble in Brener`s compositions list. The musical texture is built on a contrast between minimalistic and reflective elements, reminiscent of water flow (or energy or thought for that matter- hence the name of the piece, of course), and between more rhythmically defined elements, which have their roots in the world of jazz. The inherent contrast results in clashes between the two elements while each gets one gains some of its counterpart`s characteristics. In the bottom line, all the ingredients turn into one powerful current that gradually fades away towards the end. Everything ends with a single sound as if leaving behind a question "Was it all just a dream?"
The name "Flow" has yet another meaning related to the brand of psychology that deals with the specific condition that is referred to by the same name. It is a subjective experience of high but not strained attention, pleasure and awareness which can occur while actively performing a challenging task, and specifically, a creative activity. That is, it is also a kind of observation of the creative process by an artist himself, a kind of reflection on the Self, maybe even a self-portrait.

In 2023, the piece won third place in the KAZIMIERZ SEROCKI 18th International Composers' COMPETITION 2023 in Poland, in collaboration with the ISCM, and was performed live on the second channel of the Polish National Radio by members of the HASHTAG ENSEMBLE (Kamil Staniczek, Violin; Dominik Płociński, cello; Krzysztof Kozłowski, Piano).
